Potato Frenzy

So you want to make mashed potatoes but you don’t want to spend time peeling each potato individually — here’s a little trick to save you some time:
Take a sharp knife and gently run the blade around the circumference of the potato — the objective is to break the skin without puncturing the potato. Repeat this step for every potato you want to boil. Once you are finished with that step, place all the potatoes in a pot and add boiling water from your kettle. After the potatoes are fully boiled, drain and run the pot under cool water for a few seconds. At this point, you can use your fingers to gently remove the potato skin. They should slip right off, saving you time and energy on a simple task.

Shake It Up

Hard-boiled eggs are easy to make and hold a lot of nutrition but sometimes, the shell doesn’t want to budge and you end up peeling half the egg off with the shell (what a waste!). Instead, take your hard-boiled egg and place it in a jar with just enough water to cover the egg. Cap the jar and shake it until the shell slips right off, which should only take a few seconds.

To save yourself some time, you can also use this method to remove the husk and skins from garlic. Just simply place the whole head of garlic in a jar, cap the jar, and shake it with force for a few seconds until the skin starts falling off. Remove the garlic from the jar and take any excess husk off. You can put the individual garlic cloves back in the jar and shake to remove the rest of the skin.

Sink or Float?

Sometimes it’s a bit difficult to tell when your eggs have expired, especially if you’ve already thrown out the egg carton with the expiration date. Instead of running the risk of eating expired eggs or throwing out perfectly good eggs, follow this simple trick:

Place your eggs in a bowl of water — the fresh eggs will sink to the bottom while the expired/bad ones will float to the top.
