Cookbook author Andrea Nguyen first tasted Cà Phê Sữa Chua years ago in Hanoi, and she fell in love with this delicious Vietnamese beverage after the first taste. Cà Phê Sữa Chua is a Vietnamese yogurt coffee, made with coffee, sweetened milk, and Vietnamese-style homemade yogurt. Yes, it may seem an odd idea to combine coffee and yogurt. But trust us, the result is much more interesting than your regular cappuccino!
The Beverage
This tasty and unique Vietnamese drink is the perfect combination of tart and sweet with the addictive aroma of coffee. This tangy, bittersweet yet creamy drink packs in an intense caffeinated boost. A tall slender glass is the best choice to present or serve the drink. The yogurt floats on top at first but creates a beautiful, marbled effect after being stirred. Use robust inky coffee made from a medium-dark or dark roast. It will bring authentic Vietnamese flair to your glass. Follow this simple recipe to prepare the Vietnamese yogurt coffee at home. If you prefer a more generous serving, just double the components.
Ingredients:
- Strongly brewed coffee, ½ cup (at room temperature or cold)
- Sweetened condensed milk, 1 tablespoon
- Vietnamese-style homemade yogurt, 1/3 cup
- Ice cubes (as per choice)
Method:
Making Vietnamese-style yogurt coffee is as easy as it gets! Start by pouring the brewed coffee into a tall glass. Add in the sweetened condensed milk. Stir the mixture until well combined. Then, add the ice cubes as per your wish. It is better not to go heavy-handed with ice, as it can dilute the consistency and taste of the coffee. Lastly, top the coffee with Vietnamese yogurt. Serve the beverage with a chopstick or long spoon for stirring. Take the sip and you’ll know why it is one of the most popular Vietnamese drinks.
